Hooked on Kombucha

Recently, I was introduced to the wonderful world of the tea-based beverage, Kombucha, and I have to say, I'm hooked.

From Wikipedia:
Kombucha is an effervescent tea-based beverage that is often drunk for its health benefits or medicinal purposes. There is limited scientific information supporting any health benefit and few studies are being conducted, although there are several centuries of anecdotal accounts supporting some of the health benefits attributed to the tea.

There is limited scientific information supporting health benefits of Kombucha because no studies have been conducted. Scientists seem to spend most of their time inventing and testing new drugs and chemicals instead of finding the benefits of what already exists naturally. That being said, take one sip of Kombucha and you can tell it's good for you!

I tried my first Kombucha drink a few weeks ago at restaurant in the Gaslight district of Clifton. It was blueberry flavored and delicious. Since then I've been stocking up on the GT's Gingerade Kombucha that you can purchase at Whole Foods. It tastes like a better version of ginger ale, it has a bitter sweet taste with a kick. It may be an acquired taste for some, but I loved it right from the first sip.

The Kombucha drink is a raw drink filled with enzymes and probiotics (think yogurt). It claims to help aid in digestion, increase energy levels, decrease appetite, aid in healthier skin and hair and even boost your immune system. While I've only been drinking this for a few weeks now, I have to say it definitely decreases my appetite and gives me an energy boost. In combination with my healthy diet, I believe it's aiding in digestion as well. I couldn't tell you last time I had a stomach ache (and I used to get one nearly every day). I'm not calling it a miracle drink yet, but I am also not going to deny the benefits I have already felt from drinking Kombucha.

It's a bit pricy to buy the bottled Kombucha (about $3 a bottle)...but it makes me feel so good that I am planning on looking into buying in bulk! Kevin and I met a local guy at the Covington Farmers' Fair this weekend who bottles Komucha... We plan to buy a case from him soon! His company is called Fab Ferments, check them out!

If you ever run across the opportunity to try Kombucha, please, don't pass it up!
