daylight savings

We gain an extra hour tonight, fall back, end daylight savings, get an extra hour to drink at the bar... Call it what you want, the long days of summer are long gone.

I love falling back.

After months of sunshine and humidity, outdoor concerts, mosquitoes, late nights on the deck and being outside as much as possible…winter seems like a giant sigh of relief. Don’t get me wrong; I dread the long gray days of January and February, but something about their inevitable fate forces relaxation. I don’t expect to have more free time or get anything more done in the free time I do have, but I do expect to relax. There is something calm about when it gets dark at 6pm. It makes it okay to end your day before dinnertime. With the holidays right around the corner, I’m getting excited to put up the Christmas tree, buy presents, and listen to Christmas music. I’m looking forward to having time off work, driving all over the city and visiting friends and family…

But, as crazy as it will get, I refuse to let the chaos of the holidays interfere with the relaxing time that is winter. I’ll take a night to watch a holiday movie under a blanket with a cup of hot chocolate. I’ll stay under the covers and hour longer than I should on a Saturday morning. I’ll spend hours sitting at the window, talking on the phone and watching snow fall. I’ll start my car 10 minutes before I have to leave for work so it’s all nice and warm for me. I’ll bundle up and take Bella on a walk where I nearly slip and fall on the ice. I’ll add more makeup to my morning routine so I don’t look like death with my pale winter skin. I’ll buy warm oversized sweaters and complain when the heat is turned up too high. I’ll eat way too much food. I’ll buy my dog more presents than she’ll ever play with just because I like to watch her rip them open…

I’ll do all my traditional winter things. I'll trigger memories that only surface this time of year. I'll enjoy the fresh, crisp, winter air. I look forward to every minute of this winter...

Now where are my snow flurries?

Don’t forget to set your clock back!

p.s. our cable magically came back on this morning!
