Saturday was my first day volunteering at the SPCA. I have never volunteered with animals before, let alone ones without a home so I didn't really know what to expect. I've visited enough animal shelters in my life to know that it's heartbreaking. I rescued Bella from a shelter when she was a puppy and while she's been very difficult, we've made a lot of progress and she's turned out to be a really great dog.
I diverge...
I was helping my neighbor pack up things in her apartment last night because she's moving out. She has a little mutt who has some quirky tendencies, so I asked her if she rescued her. My neighbor quickly respond "yes, I did. Well, I don't know who rescued who, because I'm pretty sure she rescued me". I thought that was the coolest thing ever.
back to the SPCA...
It was a lot harder to spend time with the shelter dogs than I thought it would be. My heart was breaking for these sweet animals who just want to love someone. Some were more happy then others, but all of them just had the lost look in their eyes. So confused. It was really hard to watch. I know I made those dogs happier for at least a day, and that's all that matters.
It's really amazing what we can learn from animals. It also amazes me that they can provide all the things we look to other humans for. Acceptance, love, loyalty. No human can master those traits, because we are only human. Now I get why dog is God spelled backward ;)
