The Indy 500 is like a National Holiday for me. My dad grew up in Indianapolis, so I guess it was always a part of him, that he passed on to me. I remember spending Sunday afternoons on race day at my grandma's watching the race on TV knowing my dad was there watching it in person. When I got a little older, my dad started to take me and my sister to the practice days. I remember walking around the infield and looking at all the race cars in their garages. We even met a few drivers and got an autograph or two. That's when my love for Indy racing really began.
I went to my first Indy 500 race when I was 13 years old. My dad drove me and two friends up from Cincinnati and we sat in the infield and watched all the craziness unfold. Sitting in the infield at the Indy 500 is an experience like no other. After that first race, I was hooked. I went to the Indy 500 every year after that for many years to come. I went with my dad a few more times, then once I could drive, I started going with friends and boyfriends and new friends and new boyfriends. haha.
For one reason or another, I haven't been able to make it to the race the past two years. I am definitely going to go this year and I thought I should make up for some lost time by hitting up Pole Day today. The drivers were driving to qualify for the top 11 spots in the May 24th Indy 500. It was fun to watch the same drivers I have watched race many past Indy 500s back on the track today. Indy racing brings back so many good memories.
I met up with Julie, my best friend from college, and her boyfriend Brian. I don't get to see her nearly enough and it's so much fun to hang out and reminisce about all the good college times we had together. (I felt bad for Brian, he was probably sick of our stories two seconds in). Well, it was a great day to be at the race track. Qualifying is fun to watch, but it's no where near as exciting as the actual race. I cannot wait for the race in two weeks!
